Summary
In the 1st Appleton Memorial Lecture, Mr. J. A. Ratcliffe made the comment that any account of Sir Edward Appleton, as a radio scientist, would be incomplete without reference to the International Union of Scientific Radio the organisation in radio science of which Sir Edward was the President for many years. It was my privilege to be closely assocated with Appleton, both in his radio-research studies and in his activities in the international radio field, over a period of some 27 years, and I can certainly underline the deep-footed convictions which he held on the need for international collaboration in science. Appleton's personal involvement with, and his concern for, the International Union of Scientific Radio was certainly very considerable, and it was this fact which prompted me to devote this memorial lecture to the subject of international collaboration in radio science, and in particular to talk about the International Scientific Radio Union (URSI).
